Apoyo Tarahumara was a community-based humanitarian organization from California’s Monterey Bay/Central Coast. Since 1994 Apoyo Tarahumara delivered 375 metric tons of food to the Tarahumara (Rarámuri) of the Sierra Madre Mountains in Chihuahua, Mexico. Approximately 110,000 Rarámuri live in remote villages in the rugged Sierra Madre/Copper Canyon, where ongoing drought conditions since 1992 have made it difficult for the the Rarámuri to grow enough food for their own survival.
Apoyo Tarahumara also supported Karí Igómair Níwara, a Rarámuri women’s cooperative, which established one of the first indigenous schools in Mexico run by indigenous people. This cooperative also worked to develop women as leaders, educate communities about sexually transmitted diseases and domestic violence prevention, and operated craft stores to raise money. Apoyo Tarahumara delivered corn and school supplies to the school and made a commitment to continue supporting the women’s cooperative.
While IF's commitment is humanitarian, we believed that we also benefit from their unique perspective. The Rarámuri live in peace and harmony with Mother Earth. Their way of life honors family, spirituality, dignity and respect for all.
As of the end of 2013 Apoyo Tarahumara is no longer active.
Former members of Apoyo are now active in San Benito Rising. San Benito Rising is a grassroots group of volunteers who are working to make San Benito County the first "frontline" county in California to ban fracking & extreme extraction in California.
