IF emerged out of founder Bill Cane’s passion for helping people identify the opportunities that arise through crisis. Our mission is to foster hopeful alternatives for communities in crisis, and our commitment is to support them in their journey of transformation.
In 1976 Bill, a former Roman Catholic priest, and his friends in the San Francisco Bay area realized they could either give in to a sense of helplessness and despair about widespread war, injustice, pollution, hunger – or they could ask the question, “What if…?” It’s a question that leads us away from anger, fear, divisiveness and blame, and starts us on a path of hope, ingenuity, collective action and transformation. This group of progressive activists – including former Catholic priests and nuns, artists, college professors and community organizers - founded IF to raise awareness about ecological destruction, senseless wars, and about injustice that leads to hunger and poverty. A broad range of presentations – from the covert wars in Central America to soul work and art classes – and monthly gourmet dinners attracted enthusiastic new members.
IF began its quarterly publication, Integrities, in 1985 featuring commentary on world events; stories about courageous people, famous and unknown, who tirelessly work for a better world; and essays on the interconnectedness between all of us – how the suffering of others relates to our own lifestyle choices. Integrities emphasizes the importance of starting with inner change and drawing strength from simple gifts of nature, creativity, faith and friendship.
